Congratulations to Christine Selwyn who won our first online raffle and is now the proud owner of a painting of Borrowcop Locks painting by local artist and Trust member Stuart Sampson.
Christine lives locally and was over the moon to win the painting. She was presented with her prize at Borrowcop Locks, in the same location as the painting, and got to meet the artist. The raffle has raised over £140 for the Trust, much-needed funds at a time when usual fundraising activities have been halted due to COVID.

Original Painting To Be Won In Canal Trust Raffle
A Lichfield artist has donated an original painting to the city's canal trust to raise funds for its restoration work.
Stuart Sampson is known for his graphic designs in waterways guidebooks and magazines, but has revived his in-terest in painting during the lockdown. A life member of Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, Stuart chose a vision of Lichfield Canal in water as his subject for a series of paintings, the first of which can be won in an online raffle now. In the paintings, which he collectively describes as 'Wishful Thinking', Stuart has tried to merge the present with a parallel universe where the canal had never been abandoned, and which one day might look very similar.

Stuart recognises that, since he is not an 'established artist', the paintings would not fetch very much at auction. “Judge them just for what they are, a little escapism from lockdown, and enjoy,” he said.
